This is very cool. A lot of speculation at Slashdot that Apple will upgrade the firmware to disable this software, but I don't see why they would do that. It doesn't hurt sales of Airport Express or iTunes music, so it seems like Apple would be happy to have it.
Wouldn't it be more likely that they'll put the feature into an upgraded firmware soon? Just judging by their actions with widgets and Tiger... ;)

So, where did you get the Beta from? I looked at the download/beta section of Stanford, but didn't see it.
Its intel only. However, to get it you have to request to join the beta team in the forums.

How long has this been up? And who edits it? Could you imagine someone buying one and not realizing it was a mistake and then complaining? They'll need to fix this fast......

The original G4 was nothing more then a G3 with Altivec coprocessors on board. The current G3 has had many improvement including smaller dies and on chip cache. I do not believe that the current G3 would beat the current G4 if it had altivec by much if any. The reason being that you would have to make the chip larger overall to add the Altivec units and this does and would slow down the chip. Small is good. I have read some where that IBM has produced a hand full of G3 chips that test at or near 2Ghz. I believe it was a release from IBM and I read this back around July so who knows what's going on now. Now if they could only add an Altivec unit to a 2Ghz G3 chip then we might be talking but once again I understand that a big part of why the G4 chip has not increased in speed substantially is because of the Altivec unit. Apparently it's very difficult to print at smaller and smaller sizes.

That's funny, but now that I hear it, doesn't really surprise me.
I'm not really sure I understand this whole UMPC concept. It's not a Pocket PC or a laptop. To me it just seems to take the worst of each. Not as capable as a laptop: no keyboard. Not as portable as a Pocket PC. What exactly are you supposed to use this for? What niche is it trying to fill? Seems to me, unless I can actually put it in my pocket (ie. don't have to carry a bag) then I might as well cary a fully-capable, lightweight notebook.
It's basically a solution in search of a problem, and the problem now (at least for the marketers) is how to separate your money from your wallet before you catch on to the fact that you really don't need it in the first place.
Maybe it's an oversized Palm, or maybe it's a crippled laptop, or, as the author of the article above politely surmises, maybe it's just "too revolutionary." lol

Can I take it then that you don't think that any of the cars on the market at the moment are worth having or have been improved at all on the grounds that they are based on an 80 year old design? "I don't think that BMW is any good as it is based on a Ford model T", hmmmmmmmm dodgy logic methinks.
You are absolutely 110% correct. We've allready dismissed BackToTheMac's outlandish fallacies though :)
I think he gets the picture now....

90% of my work is done in PhotoShop. Without it I'd be lost. So I'd have to say Adobe. Now if only I could get my company to drop Quark for InDesign . . .
I dont know why, but I've always preferred fireworks to photoshop. I guess it's because I dont do particularly graphics intensive stuff, and I always found photoshop to be more confusing than fireworks.
oh well, everyone to their own :)

but of course Camino is the superior browswer! :D ;)
i might give FF a try with the next major release though, just for kicks..... its always good to see progress though, even if its security, every bit helps
When Camino works properly, it's a great browser but I have more trouble with its display of pages than with Firefox.

I'm with Benjamin on this one... those logos/icons are similar, but not the same, at all, look at the reflection, the shadow, the shape of the "pointer", the angle, etc:

I had trouble getting it to work at first also. The instructions from FAH were not newbie friendly which I need. Check the link below. The main thing missing from the FAH directions is when it asked for memory the number was HUGE change this to 2048 or how much memory you have. I did get an early end work unit for the first unit then re-loaded and very smooth sailing after.
I also was running SETI on this laptop, your right it Screams!! Was crushing my AMD X2 4200 500 vs 950 for the Mac. Folding runs cooler don't know exact temps just feeling bottom.

thanks, i might try folding again when i get a chance. right now i'll just let SETI run. I'm trying to get higher on the macrumors team. right now i'm 17, and i just started like 2 days ago!
i've got to study anyways. maybe i'll setup folding tomorrow after my finals

Why does it matter if they overclocked an old Athlon to 1.6ghz? Tell you what, to make it fair why don't we add in my overclocked dual 800?
Jesus you still don't get it. If you compare Apples to Apples, the 1.6GHZ Dual Athlon is still slower in apps that are multi processor aware. Now, how about the PIV? How does that stack up? The x86 is garbage. Any real IT director would know that.
The point that I was making was that the testing was flawed.
And pc's suck.

There are a number of us who are having trouble accessing .mac mail since last night (18+ hours). I can access ALL .mac services, except for mail (webmail seems to be unavailble as well).
.Mac system status shows the following: ".Mac email is currently unavailable for a small number of .Mac customers. iDisk and web-based services (like HomePage, Backup and iCards) are unaffected."
